Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of persistent organic pollutants that have been shown to bioaccumulate in marine organisms. This study investigates the presence and level of PAHs and PCBs in the liver and gonads of marine fish species from the South Atlantic Bight. Samples were analysed for PAHs and PCBs by gas chromatography-electron capture detection (GC-ECD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A simple method for the extraction and clean-up of PCBs was validated and applied to the analysis of the fish samples. The analysis of the tissue samples revealed the presence of PAHs and PCBs in all fish species with levels that ranged from 3.3 ± 0.1 to 121.4 ± 2.2 ng/g wet weight. The contaminants were detected at levels above the detection limit of the GC-ECD and GC-MS methods. This is the first report of PAHs and PCBs in fish samples from the South Atlantic Bight.
